Tamil Tigers defeat

After three decades of bloodshed, and a final showdown that trapped the militants with civilians on a tiny strip of coastland, the Sri Lankan government declared victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam on May 17. The death of firebrand leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran (left) sealed the Sri Lankan government's success.

Ripple effect: Tens of thousands of Tamils were held in camps to filter out remaining fighters, drawing voluble criticism from human rights groups. Attacks by Tamil Tigers were quelled, but zeal for a separate state is alive and well. A referendum held by expatriate Tamils this month in Canada showed near 100 per cent support for separation.
