President accepts he is not Maha Raja


The campaign carried out recently to liken the President to Maha Raja has been stopped. It is learnt. The President in his speech at the opening of the Kinniya Bridge on Tuesday (20) said he was not Maha Raja.

Earlier about 40 songs calling him Maha Raja including songs like “Long life to Maha Raja” were broadcast on state media while songs praising Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the second in command were also given equal publicity.

Government members also referred to the President as Maha Raja in parliament. While the campaign was launched from the President’s House, the President it is learnt has now ordered it to be stopped after learning that many people have in fact criticized the tactic.

The first step was to stop broadcasting the song “Long life to Maha Raja” on state media and the President has now himself admitted that he is not Maha Raja.
