Sources from Temple Trees said that First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa has requested the President to keep Basil Rajapaksa and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa away from political activities in order to resolve some of the political issues currently faced by him.
Sources added that the President’s eldest son Namal Rajapaksa and Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga have agreed with the First Lady’s decision.
Shiranthi Rajapaksa has put pressure on the President following advice received by SLFP seniors. They have told the First Lady that it was
Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who was responsible for the unwanted rift with General Sarath Fonseka and that allowing it to intensify further would jeopardize the President’s political future.
The rift between the President and General Fonseka has resulted in an internal conflict within the Rajapaks family and the President had recently reprimanded Basil and Gotabhaya and had asked them to keep silent till the problems are resolved.
It is in this backdrop that Gotabhaya decided to go overseas to Singapore and has told the Divaina newspaper that he wished to move away from everything and spend time relaxing in his village. Gotabhaya Rajapksa has said he wished to go to his village and engage himself in paddy cultivation and that he had no intention of entering politics.
Meanwhile, Basil Rajapaksa has also decided to move away from politics in this backdrop
