Senior UN official calls for greater attention to human needs of Sri Lanka's resettled

A high ranking United Nations official who visited Sri Lanka recently has said that allocation of land and job creation for the people resettled in the conflict-affected areas are the key issues that needed greater attention.

Sri Lanka will attack blatant propaganda against the country with all energy, Minister tells UNHRC

Sri Lanka is willing to accept justified criticism and helpful comments in a constructive spirit but will assail unjustified blatant propaganda created by groups or individuals with an agenda inimical to the country with all energy at country's disposal, the Special Human Rights Envoy, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe told the United Nations today.

Tamil migrant claims don't mesh with UN report Situation has 'greatly improved' in Sri Lanka

Supporters of the Tamil migrants who believe the asylum-seekers are being treated unfairly by a tough-talking federal government must recognize the fact that not everyone "fleeing" Sri Lanka should be automatically considered a "refugee" and allowed to stay in Canada.

UN strongly objects Sri Lanka minister's protest blocking access to its offices

The United Nations has registered its strong objections to the protest organized by the Sri Lankan Minister of Housing, Construction, and Engineering Services and National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa at the UN premises in Colombo barricading the UN staff in the compound.

UN approves new body to promote women's equality

The General Assembly on Friday unanimously approved the establishment of a single U.N. entity to promote equality for women.
The resolution adopted by consensus by the 192-member world body will put four existing U.N. bodies dealing with the advancement of women under a single umbrella that will be known as ``UN Women.'' Diplomats burst into applause when Assembly President Ali Abdessalam Treki banged his gavel signifying approval.

UN agencies assist Sri Lanka government in flood relief



May 22,  The United Nations agencies have given their assistance to the Government of Sri Lanka to provide relief to over 600,000 people affected by the heavy flooding brought on by torrential pre-monsoon rains lashing the country for over a week.

UN team visits flood affected areas of Sri Lanka to assess situation

May 19,  A United Nations assessment team visited the flood affected areas in Gampaha district in Sri Lanka's Western Province today to evaluate the situation as the heavy rains brought in by the feeder bands of a cyclone lashed the country submerging the province.
According to the Disaster Management Center of Sri Lanka as of Wednesday over 458,783 persons (104,213 families) have been affected by the heavy rains. The death toll due to the inclement weather has risen to 18 by Wednesday.
