Sri Lanka to amend bilateral trade agreements with neighbors, no restrictions on imports from India

Sri Lanka is considering amending bilateral trade agreements with the neighboring SAARC countries as the need arises but there is no move to impose restrictions on imports from India under the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA), a government minister said Thursday.

SAARC Secretary-General calls on Sri Lanka President

The newly-appointed Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed of Maldives paid a courtesy call on Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees today (22).


Saeed, 30, a former attorney general and a former parliamentarian of Maldives, is the first female and youngest Secretary-General of regional body to hold the position. She assumed office on March 01, 2011 succeeding Dr. Sheel Kanta Sharma of India to lead SAARC.
Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L Peiris and senior officials of the Ministry were also present.
