Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) alleges that the extremist groups in the country who are harassing the Muslim and Christian communities are supported by the Defense Ministry.
UNP Communications Division Head, parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera says the government needs to lay down rules to protect the freedom for a person to practice his/her religion. Samaraweera, while noting that the government is bound to protect the freedom of all religions as a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), says that laying down such rules could prevent racial disharmony. According to Samaraweera, introducing laws against harassment based on religious beliefs could help the government prove its innocence if it is not connected to any extremist group. He has added that if the harassment against the Muslim community continues in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankans employed in the Middle East could also be subjected to harassments by extremist elements in those countries. -->
