Sri Lanka's Central Province hospital gets modern surgical complex

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Friday (22) declared open a state-of-the -art surgical complex at the Kandy Teaching Hospital.
The four-storied surgical complex, built at a cost of 255 million rupees, has 8 operation theaters that are fully equipped with modern facilities.

The surgical center is aimed at strengthening the healthcare services provided to the people of the Central Province. The government aims to further improve the facilities at the hospital to bring it up to the level of standard of the Colombo National Hospital.

Since 2004, the Kandy Teaching Hospital has seen a remarkable improvement in service, according to the Health Ministry. The member of specialist doctors serving in the hospital has now increased to 82 from a 52 in 2004. The expenditure for medicine at the Kandy Hospital has risen 20 fold from 2004 to nearly 1.3 billion rupees now.

Ministers Maithripala Sirisena and Keheliya Rambukwella, Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake Parliamentarian Lohan Ratwatte and Secretary to the Health Ministry Nihal Jayathilake were present at the occasion.
