
Sri Lanka Navy Wednesday (27) brought home 21 Sri Lankan fishermen released from custody by the Indian officials.
Indian Coast Guard Ship "Rajkamal" has handed over the released fishermen to the Sri Lanka Navy at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in the seas off Kankasanthurai.
Sri Lanka Naval Vessel P 483 attached to the Northern Naval Command and Sri Lanka Coast Guard vessel CG 43 have brought the fishermen along with their four fishing trawlers to the shore.
Indian Coast Guard unit patrolling off Krishnapet near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, north of Chennai, arrested the fishermen on January 18 for trespassing into Indian waters. They were detained along with their four boats and equipment and brought to Chennai.
The Sri Lankans were produced before a court in Egmore and the court remanded them at the Puzhal prison for 15 days.
Repatriation of Sri Lankan fishermen and their boats comes as a direct result of the collaborative efforts made by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Sri Lanka Navy and the Indian officials.
