Indian President says India making progress to ensure equality for Sri Lanka Tamil people

President of India, Pranab Mukherjee said Thursday that India is making progress in its engagement with Sri Lanka to ensure "a life of peace, dignity and equality" for the Tamil minority in the island nation.
Addressing the Indian Parliament today President Mukherjee said India is also making progress to resettle and rehabilitate the nearly 300,000 people displaced at the end of the three decades long war in May 2009. "We are making progress in our engagement with Sri Lanka, including in our efforts to resettle and rehabilitate the internally displaced persons there and to ensure a life of peace, dignity and equality for the Tamil people," the Indian President said in parliament. While Mukherjee made the comment that India, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council during the last two years, played an important role in the Councils efforts to promote international peace and security, his brief statement did not give any indication on the stand India would take on a fresh resolution against Sri Lanka at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council session later this month.
