The Association of Employment Agencies of Singapore has decided to increase the number of recruits for housemaids from Sri Lanka.
Already from 100 to 200 Sri Lankan housemaids migrate to Singapore per month and the Association has decided to increase this number to 500 - 1000, says the Sri Lanka High Commission of Singapore.
An agreement is to be signed in January between the Association of the Employment Agencies of Singapore and Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau to facilitate the recruitment of more housemaids.
The Association is currently cooperating with Sri Lankan authorities to explain training requirements for maids, and speed up the hiring process.
The High Commission said housemaids are recruited from countries like Indonesia, Philippines, India and Myanmar but Sri Lanka will be given more opportunities because of the quality of Sri Lankan domestic helpers.
According to the Association, most of the Sri Lankan maids speak English and have at least 10 years of education.
Already 4,500 Sri Lankan housemaids work in Singapore for a salary between 400 - 500 Singapore dollars.
