Head of Jaffna University Students' Union in Sri Lanka surrenders to HRC

The president of the Jaffna University Students' Union in Sri Lanka V. Pavanandan together with another student activist has surrendered to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) office in Jaffna. Coordinator of the HRC office in Jaffna, Kanagaraj has confirmed to the media that the two students had surrendered to the Commission. The HRC is to study their case before presenting them before courts. The Terrorism Investigations Department (TID) of police has informed the university administration and the parents of the two students that they would be permitted to visit the students. Nine students from the Jaffna University have been arrested on charges of supporting terrorist activities following the clash between university students and the security forces on November 27th when the students tried to commemorate the dead fighters of the former terrorist organization on its Heroes' Day (Mahaveer Day).
