The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of the FR petition filed by 61 petitioners against the unlawful arrest and torture meted out to the residents of Jaffna, to March 27th next year. The petitioners have said they had been allegedly unlawfully arrested and tortured when they had protested against the "Grease Devil" phenomenon that was taking place in Jaffna at the time. Deputy Solicitor General Shavendra Fernando appearing for the respondents has requested for time to file objections since there was a number of petitions to look into. The Supreme Court had granted leave to proceed when it was heard previously. The bench comprised Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, and Justices P.A. Ratnayake, Chandra Ekanayake. The objections are to be filed by January 31st and the counter affidavit one month from the date.
