Sri Lanka minor Tamil party leader to file a complaint to the UNHRC on prison riot

Leader of Sri Lanka's Democratic People's Front (DPF) and former parliamentarian Mano Ganesan says he would file a complaint to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on the recent riot at the Welikada Prison.
Ganesan said that he is currently in the process of gathering information on the riot in the prison, since there are allegations of serious rights violations that had taken place at the time. He observed that the authorities had violated the guidelines set out by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka when the riot had broken out. However, he noted that families of some inmates who were killed during the riot are hesitant to speak due to alleged intimidations by some individuals. The party leader said he would file the complaint as soon as information is gathered on the alleged human rights violations. He also noted that an inquiry needs to be conducted into the actions of the Special Task Force (STF) and the Army during the riot. The government had appointed a three-member committee to investigate the deadly riots in the Welikada prison that killed 27 inmates and injured 43 people including some police officers.
