Main opposition of Sri Lanka asks government to show an alternative to the 13th Amendment

The government needs to show an alternative devolution proposal if it intended to abolish the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has pointed out.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the 13th Amendment had a few shortcomings that need to be addressed and the piece of legislation should be amended to address those shortcomings. However, he insisted that there was no necessity for the 13th Amendment to be abolished. According to Attanayake, one issue that needs to be addressed is the prevention of provincial councils from bypassing the parliament. The UNP Secretary reiterated that it was important for the government to propose an alternative power devolution mechanism, if it wanted to repeal the 13th Amendment.
