Adverse weather conditions due to the north-east monsoons and the remnant disturbance of cyclone Neelam have lashed Sri Lanka with torrential rains causing flooding and earth slips.
Over 210,000 people have been affected and eight people have been killed by the inclement weather across the country. Another 15 people are reported missing.
The Disaster Management Center Saturday reported that 216,681 from 51,947 families have been affected by the adverse weather and 14,762 people have been evacuated. The displaced have been housed in 97 shelters across the country. Island wide 341 houses have been fully damaged and another 4,744 houses have been partially damaged. Several roads in the central province have been inundated and some others were blocked by landslides or falling rocks and trees. Water levels in major rivers, Kelani, Kalu Ging and Nilwala rose to spill levels and flooded the areas downstream. The government said it has allocated 200 million rupees for relief and the relief items have been provided to affected communities through the Divisional secretariats. -->
