Commissioner of the UN Human Rights council (UNHRC), Navi Pillay is being briefed on the situation in Sri Lanka by the Council's delegation that visited the country last month.
A spokesperson from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the UNHRC in Geneva, Ravina Shamdasani has told the local media
that Pillay is being briefed about Sri Lanka. Shamdasani has observed that the Commissioner is yet to decide on her proposed visit to Sri Lanka. However, Pillay is likely to decide on her visit to Sri Lanka shortly. The UNHRC delegation to Sri Lanka led by Hanny Megally, Chief, Asia Pacific and Middle East visited the country last month following a resolution that was adopted on Sri Lanka in March at the Council. The Sri Lankan government meanwhile has invited Pillay to visit the country to see firsthand the ground situation. Pillay, who has been very critical of Sri Lanka's human rights situation and insisted on an international investigation into Sri Lanka's war, has now agreed to visit Sri Lanka. The government believes Pillay's visit will help to enlighten the international community about the progress and development achieved by Sri Lanka after ending terrorism three years ago. -->
