Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that members of the government and their supporters are corrupt and engaged in criminal activities.
JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference that governing party members and their supporters have caused a breakdown in the law and order situation in the country.
He accused senior governing party members and their supporters to the lower levels of protecting criminals without enforcing the law. He said that there have been 975 cases of rape and 700 cases of child abuse reported during the past 180 days. "The manipulation of the law and order in the country has resulted in the increase in the crime rate, especially in sexual abuse," Dissanayake observed. Citing police records, the JVP parliamentarian said that 17 governing party members are currently facing criminal charges. Several ruling party politicians and their supporters, especially in the Southern Province, have been arrested recently for committing high profile murders and rapes of minors. According to Dissanayake, people need to consider these issues and realize that the increase in the crime rate was due to governing party politicians and the government's inability to address the socio-economic issues faced by the country.
