Sri Lanka's ruling United Peoples' Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has decided to nominate the incumbent Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan for the chief minister post of the Eastern Province.
The General Secretary of Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) P. Prashanthan has confirmed the ruling party's decision in a media release, local news site Ada Derana reported. Sri Lanka's major Muslim party and government ally, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) meanwhile, is in a quest to form an alliance with any party which will give the chief ministerial post to the party. The majority of the population of Sri Lanka's Eastern Province is Muslims. The SLMC is reportedly conducting discussions with the major Tamil party Tamil National Alliance to contest the Eastern PC polls together but neither party has confirmed the move. The TNA which does not have power in the East is aiming to chase the Eastern Tamil party and the constituent of the ruling party, TMVP, away by forming an alliance with the SLMC in order to get the large number of Muslim votes in the East, political sources point out. The TNA is scheduled to hold a special meeting to decide the nominations for the Eastern PC elections today in Trincomalee.
