Sri Lanka's former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka says that he would continue to pursue his political ambitions amidst obstacles.
Addressing the first press conference since his release from prison three weeks ago, Fonseka said
he will topple the government at the 2016 elections with the help of other opposition parties although he himself is barred from contesting in politics for seven years. "I will always fight for the principles that I stood for. I will topple the current corrupt regime and save this country," he said. Observing that the country's law and order has deteriorated and the Executive Presidency had led to a dictatorship in the country, Fonseka said he stands for abolishing of the Executive Presidency. He reiterated his commitment to end the corrupt political culture in the country. According to Fonseka, independence of the judiciary needed to be restored and a policy needed to be introduced against corruption and nepotism. The former Army Commander, who was pardoned by the President on May 21 from serving a three-year prison term, also denied any plans to join the government. He also pointed out that a political solution agreeable to the people of the country needed to be implemented to address the national issue.
