Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says that most of the government institutions are running at a loss.
UNP parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella has told parliament that 95 percent of the government institutions incurred losses.
He has said the state institutions were incurring losses since the office bearers appointed to the institutions embezzle the monies. He has added that the situation was due to the inefficiencies of the government. According to Kiriella, the government institutions did not incur losses as a result of providing relief to the people, but due to inefficiencies. Kiriella has made these observations in response to a statement made by Petroleum Minister Susil Premajayantha that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) incurred losses since it sold fuel with the intention of providing relief to the people.
