Former Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP), Karu Jayasuriya says he would not quit the party.
Jayasuriya has made this statement in response to claims that he was looking at joining forces with former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.
He has dismissed speculation of quitting the UNP saying that he will not change parties and would remain in the UNP. He has added that he was a "born and bred and UNPer" and would remain the same. However, Jayasuriya has said there are certain instances when his consciences say otherwise, and at those times he acts according to his conscience. "I believe that the UNP will only make the country stronger, and will never bring it down," he has said. According to Jayasuriya, differences of opinions gives rise to problems, and members of a political party should have the same political opinion to be able to develop a country. He has also expressed hope that all opposition parties would be able to stand together to take the country forward.
