The External Affairs Ministry of Sri Lanka is currently preparing an Action Plan on the implementation of the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).
The External Affairs Ministry is to prepare the Action Plan taking into consideration the recommendations that have already been implemented, the ones remaining to be implemented and the stance of the coalition parties of the governing United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA). An official from the External Affairs Ministry told ColomboPage that the Action Plan is being prepared with the coordination of the Defence Ministry, Justice Ministry, Attorney General's Department and other relevant line ministries. The reports handed by the coalition parties of the UPFA to the Presidential Secretariat are also being handed over to the External Affairs Ministry to prepare this Action plan. "We are looking at completing the LLRC Action Plan by mid-May," the official said. He added that there would also be some synergies in the LLRC Action Plan and the Human Rights Action Plan being prepared to for the UNHRC's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in October and November. The UN resolution on Sri Lanka, sponsored by the United States and adapted by the UN Human Rights Council at the 19th sessions of UNHRC in Geneva on March 22, requests the Sri Lankan government to present, as expeditiously as possible, a comprehensive action plan detailing the steps that the Government has taken and will take to implement the recommendations.
