Election laws violated in Sri Lanka since 2005 - former deputy leader of UNP

Former Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Karu Jayasuriya says that election laws have been violated in the country since 2005. Jayasuriya has told the media that the violations of election laws and political interferences during election time have now become the norm in the country. Jayasuriya's comments are made in the backdrop of speculations over the calling of early elections for several provincial councils this year.
He has explained that the rules laid down by the Election Commissioner during election times have been blatantly violated, especially during provincial council elections. Jayasuriya has cited the misuse of public property and entertaining the public using public resources as common election law violations. Continuation of such practices would erode the people's confidence in the electoral process, he has noted. Jayasuriya has called on the government to establish an independent police and elections commission and conduct elections in a free and fair manner.
