Sri Lanka opposition party groups clash in Matugama

A clash has occurred at Agalawatta in Matugama today between two groups of the opposition United National Party (UNP).
The clash took place between the UNP members of Sajith Premadasa group and the supporters of the Kalutara district UNP parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma. Thewarapperuma, who is the electoral organizer of Matugama, has opposed organizing a meeting by the UNP rebels to rally support for the commemoration of late President R. Premadasa organized by the UNP rebels to instead of the party May Day held in Jaffna on May 01. UNP Western Province Councilor Shiral Lakthilaka, Southern Province Councilor Maithri Gunaratne and Ravi Jayawardena along with several supporters of the rebel group had attended the meeting to inform the public of the commemoration. Reports say that gun shots were also heard from the scene but no one was injured.
