Sri Lanka External Affairs Minister on an official visit to Maldives

Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has arrived in the Maldives on a three-day official visit, Haveeru Online reported.
The Sri Lankan Minister was received by his Maldivian counterpart Dr. Abdul Samad Abdulla along with the Maldivian Foreign Ministry officials and the Sri Lankan high commissioner in the Maldives. Prof. Peiris is the first high ranking Sri Lankan official to visit Maldives since the new President Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan assumed power in February. The Sri Lankan Minister is expected to hold talks with the officials of Maldivian Foreign, Defense, and Home ministries to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries. He is also expected to call on President Waheed during his visit that will conclude on Sunday. "This is a three day official visit by Peiris. Tomorrow he would start the official talks, where he will meet the president, meet with Home Ministry, Defence Ministry and Foreign ministry officials as well," Minister Samad has said. Maldives is one of the 15 countries voted against the US-sponsored UN resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva last month. All South Asian member countries in the UNHRC except India voted in favor of Sri Lanka. India sided with the US and the West and voted for the resolution. Maldivian FM has said that one of the reasons for the Sri Lankan Minister's trip was to thank the Maldivian government for voting in Sri Lanka's favor.
