On his first political visit to Maharasthra, Rahul Gandhi today expressed worries over the Congress losing its base in the state against the backdrop of the party's poor showing in the recent civic polls. With his one-day visit to Mumbai being viewed in party circles as a move to put the state unit into a pro-active mode and retrieve lost ground, Rahul said
he would tour Maharashtra more often to boost the grass root cadre and assist party preparations for the assembly elections due in 2014. Interacting with NSUI delegates from Maharashtra, the AICC General Secretary said this was his first political visit. Rahul also had meetings with Youth Congress workers and Block and District chiefs of Congress in Maharashtra. "I plan to undertake constituency-wise tours to take a first hand view of the party's strengths and weaknesses. I will come more often here", the Congress leader is said to have told the NSUI delegates at a closed door meeting at the Bhaidas Hall in suburban Vile Parle. The Congress leader said he would extensively campaign and tour the state for the 2014 elections. Tushar Pote, a second year BBA student of SSGM College from Shirdi who was present, quoted Rahul as having said he was worried that the Congress was losing its base at the grass root level to NCP. "Why are we number two party in the recent local bodies elections. I got to know different versions of the reasons. Hence I have decided to personally look into it," Rahul is reported to have said. During the interaction, Rahul was told that ever since Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar came in the forefront in the state, the party was steadily improving its base at the grass root level whereas the Congress was identified with scams. "Rahul said the Congress had undertaken a clean-up system referring to the organisational elections in NSUI and Youth Congress. He said when you add clean water to muddied water in a bucket, overall it gets cleaner", Pote said. According to Pote, Rahul was also asked why he was restricting himself only to Uttar Pradesh. In his response, Rahul told the delegates about his plans to tour Maharashtra often.
