Former deputy leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition appointed as an electoral organizer

Former deputy leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Karu Jayasuriya has been appointed as the party's organizer of the Mahara electorate. Jayasuriya's new appointment had been made by the party's Advisory Committee headed by party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
Jayasuriya did not hold any organizer post previously since he was the deputy leader of the party. However, after being defeated at the election for the party leader post last December, Jayasuriya lost his position as the party's deputy leader and also his slot in the Working Committee. Nevertheless, Jayasuriya claims that he would continue to work for the betterment for the party and that he did not need positions to do his work. Meanwhile, firebrand UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara has been appointed as the organizer for Panduwasnuwara. The new appointments are seen as an effort by the party leadership to unite the fractured party.
