The Colombo District Court judge Ranjith N. Wathupola Friday (30) rejected a petition filed by the dissident faction of Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) seeking an injunction order against the JVP special convention scheduled to be held on January 01, Debarawewa, Hambantota.
Seeking the injunction, the petitioners, two Central Committee members of the JVP, parliamentarian G.M. Ajith Kumara and G. Kularathna of the Movement for Peoples Struggle have cited that the party general assembly scheduled to be held on January 01 is illegal and it has not received the approval of the JVP Central Working. The counsel for the petitioners told the court that they have not been informed of the convention and they came to know only through the media. The dissidents accuse the party leader and General Secretary of planning to arbitrarily appoint 226 members to the Central Working Committee at the convention. The judge postponed the hearings till January 06, the date given for the respondents, JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe and 21 other members of the Central Committee to show cause.
