Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) and Housing and Construction Minister of Sri Lanka, Wimal Weerawansa has called for a broad discussion between the parties in the governing United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) on the proposed legislation on non-state universities.
Minister Weerawansa has expressed this need in a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He has said that there was a discussion over the proposed legislation with intellectuals expressing various views about the legislation being drafted by the Higher Education Ministry. He has noted that while there is a sentiment that the legislation would destroy the free education system in the country, the government should not allow any move that would hamper the country's free education. According to Weerawansa, there have been many controversies in the country over legislation that had been introduced by the government without proper discussion and consultation. Citing the private sector pension bill and the expropriation act as examples, the Minister has asked that a proper discussion be held with the UPFA party leaders under the patronage of the President on the proposed non-state universities legislation.
