Former Sri Lanka Army Commander's wife not to appeal for a presidential pardon for her husband

The wife of Sri Lanka's jailed former Army Commander and defeated presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka, Anoma Fonseka has stressed that no one in her family would appeal to the President for a pardon for Sarath Fonseka. She made these observations responding to a question raised by weekend newspaper Ravaya regarding a statement by President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently.
The President told the media chiefs that he would consider a pardon for Fonseka if the family makes a request. Mrs. Fonseka has also admitted that MP Tiran Alles had talks with the President to secure release of the former Army chief. Meanwhile, the legal expert J.C. Weliamuna of Transparency International told the same newspaper that a request was not required if the President wanted to grant a pardon to anyone.
