35-year-old orangutan in Sri Lanka zoo passed away

A 35-year-old orangutan lived in Dehiwala zoo of Sri Lanka for the last 28 years has passed away due to natural causes, Sri Lanka zoo officials said.

The male Orangutan named Bulu, born in 1976, was brought to Sri Lanka's zoological gardens in 1981 from the Rotterdam zoo in Netherlands. It belonged to a hybrid Borneo species.

Bulu has started showing abnormal behaviour several months ago and was diagnosed with a hernia in May. The veterinary surgeons of the zoo successfully performed a laparotomy in June on the primate, similar in age to a 70-year-old human, to save his life.

He has completely recovered from the surgery but fell due to the old age, the zoo officials said.
