Sri Lanka Opposition Leader calls for the establishment of rule of law in the country

Sri Lanka Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe urged public to cast aside their political differences and work towards establishing the rule of law in the country in order to prevent the destruction of the whole social system.

Wickremasinghe made this comment during a meeting organized to thank the main opposition United National Party (UNP) activists who worked to bring victory to the party at the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) election.

Referring to the shooting incident in Kolonnawa on election day, Wickremasinghe said the culture of assassination commenced on September 8th last year.

"The abolishing of the 17th Amendment assassinated the supremacy of the law," he said, adding that a large number of murders had taken place since then.

Any country needs democracy and the supremacy of the law to move forward and the police and the Attorney General's Department need to play fair, he said.

"The government instead of appointing the independent commissions under the 17th Amendment introduced an 18th Amendment repealing the 17th Amendment," Wickremasinghe said.

However, he said that everyone needed to join together to fight against the current system.
