Sri Lanka's budget for next year has been prepared to ensure a stable economic growth while keeping the inflation down, President Mahinda Rajapaksa pointed out today.
Speaking at a discussion held at the Temple Trees today to seek views and proposals of various parties and groups for preparing the next year budget, the President said the government had succeeded in maintaining an economic growth of 8 percent this year and reducing inflation from 11 percent to 5.7 percent was a major achievement.
Today's meeting was the final discussion of a series of nearly 60 pre-budget meetings held with groups from various sectors seeking input to draft the final budget.
The President at today's meeting focused on the development of country's schools and safeguarding locations of archeological interests. The meeting also focused on preventing the human-elephant conflict and the crop damage by the elephants.
Earlier the President met with the representatives from plantation sector, representatives of trade associations, economic centers and super markets, media personnel and migrant workers to draft a people friendly budget.
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara, parliamentarians and senior government officials including ministry secretaries were present at the discussion.
