The Defence Secretary of Sri Lanka Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that a massive project would be launched next year to solve the flood problem in the Colombo city.
Rajapaksa has said the project that would be launched with Chinese assistance would also renovate the Beira Lake and canals connected to it.
The Defence Secretary has made this comment at a function held to explain the government's beautification programme for the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council.
He has said the World Bank would also provide US$ 150 million to construct new lakes to control floods.
Referring to the garbage problem in Colombo, Rajapaksa has noted that the inefficiency and corruption of the Municipal Councils had caused the garbage problem.
The Urban Development Authority responsible for the development programs in the capital city comes under the Defence Ministry.
