Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that measures will be taken to construct an airport in the hill capital of historic Kandy city and requested the Chief Minister of the Central Province to allocate a proper land for that purpose.
The President apprised the business community and the professionals residing within the Kandy Municipal Council limits of the massive development activities being implemented in the city during a meeting held at the President's House Sunday (02).
The President said the construction of domestic airport in Kandy is aimed at facilitating the city to reap maximum benefits of the booming tourism industry.
Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka with the world-famous Temple of Tooth is a major tourist destination next to the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.
He explained that the government has allocated 3 billion rupees to develop the city by solving solid waste crisis and minimizing the traffic congestion.
The President, pointing out the need for a strong relationship between the government and the municipal council to carry out the planned activities, requested the people of Kandy to join with the government at forthcoming polls to strengthen the development process of the city.
