Railways on Wednesday announced an exgratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kin of those who were killed in the rail mishap near Chennai.
Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi said Rs 1 lakh would be given to those grievously injured and Rs 25,000 for those who suffered simple injuries.
Two trains collided near Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district on Tuesday night, killing at least seven and injuring another 85.
The number of casualties may go up with sevaral passengers still trapped inside the trains.
Train No. 187 Arakkonam-Vellore passenger was waiting for signal near Sitheri Station when the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) running between Chennai Beach and Vellore rammed into it from behind at around 9.40 pm, according to the railway police.
The injured were rushed to the Arakkonam Government Hospital.
