Sri Lanka-India joint naval exercise begins

The navies of Sri Lanka and India commenced a joint naval exercise, named "SLINEX 2011", Monday in the seas off Trincomalee, the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) announced.

The joint exercise held from 19th to 24th September 2011 is aimed at enhancing interoperability of the two navies.

Indian Navy ships participating in the joint exercise arrived in Trincomalee under the command of Rear Admiral HCS Bisht, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF) of the Indian Navy. He called on the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy and the Director General Operations at the Naval Headquarters in Colombo and held discussions on the exercise.

The drill is expected to provide the opportunity for the neighboring navies to rehearse the concept of joint naval operations and enhance own skills in order to gain from each other's experience.

The exercise will be conducted with the participation of two Offshore Patrol Vessels, one Fast Missile Vessel, two Fast Gun Boats and six Fast Attack Craft (FAC) from the Sri Lanka Navy.

They will be assisted by a Dornier Maritime Patrol Air Craft (MPA), one Destroyer, one Frigate, one Missile Corvette, one Landing Ship Tank and two Fast Attack Craft of the Indian Navy.

According to the SLN, the five-day excercise will be held in four phases covering a Harbour Training Programme at Trincomalee and a Sea Training Programme in the seas off the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka.

The exercise is structured to give maximum training value to participating navy personnel of both countries with special presentations on Force Protection Measures and Anti-Piracy Operations.

Among the operations to be focused on during the exercise are the Maritime Interdiction Operation (MIO) including Visit Board Search and Seize (VBSS), Search and Rescue (SAR) Demonstrations and Asymmetric Threat Exercise.

The two navies conduct routine joint exercises to maintain close cooperation in protecting the sea between the two countries.
