Sri Lanka's First Lady, Shiranthi Rajapaksa who has accompanied President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the tour to the United States to attend the 66th session of UN General Assembly in New York met her US counterpart yesterday.
Mrs. Rajapaksa met the American First Lady Michel Obama at a Tea Reception hosted by Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, wife of the UN Secretary General, for spouses of Heads of State.
The Sri Lankan First Lady, on an invitation extended to her by the United Nation's Children Fund also met the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF Rima Salah Thursday (22nd) at the UNESCO Head Quarters.
Mrs. Rajapaksa and the Deputy Director in length discussed the children's development activities in Sri Lanka and South Asia, especially, focusing on improvements in children health, nutrition and education.
The First Lady apprised the UN official of Sri Lankan government sponsored programs for the children that have been targeted to improve their health and nutrition and to provide a secure future for the children.
Ms. Salah commended Sri Lanka's measures for child development and assured the UNICEF's continued support to those programs.
