The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today handed over the ownership of 500 housing units built for the 2004 tsunami victims of Sri Lanka.
Saudi Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Abdul Aziz Al-Jammaz handed over the symbolic key to the 500 tsunami houses to Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees today.
The Kingdom and Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2006 to build 1000 housing units for the people affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in the Ampara district in the Eastern Province.
External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L Peiris, Deputy Minister Neomal Perera, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to External Affairs Ministry K.Amunugama, Government Agent of Ampara Sunil Kannangara, and Saudi officials were also present at the occasion.
