Sri Lanka President promotes extracurricular activities in schools

Sri Lanka's schools should focus on producing a disciplined and patriotic generation who would be committed to build the nation and to achieve that country's children should be guided spiritually while providing them with a good education, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

Participating in 'Richmond Punaralokaya' celebrations held yesterday (March 29) at the Richmond College in Galle, where his father, late D.A. Rajapaksa was a student, the President said the aim of the education is to steer the people towards success and for that purpose extracurricular activities are essential.



"Our country requires citizens who can win the world and schools are the place where such persons are built. Our education should eliminate discrimination on cast, ethnic and class differences," he said.
The President emphasizing the need to change the attitude of the parents said most parents believe that successful people are produced through theoretical knowledge as well as English education and this attitude must be changed to produce good citizens.
"Our Buddhist education institutes which were in existence from ancient times were not limited to books," the President said.
President Rajapaksa urged everyone to contribute to make all our schools better and end categorizing schools as national schools, popular schools, rural schools or remote schools
He pledged his government's support to provide schools with the required facilities to uplift their standards.
The President declared open the D.A. Rajapaksa Memorial Sports Complex built by the D.A. Rajapaksa Foundation and a new administration building complex.
He also inaugurated an Information Technology Center with 21 computers, new access road to the College and the "Rich Ease 2004", Richmond information unit and A basketball court constructed in the school premises.
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Governor of Southern Province Kumari Balasooriya, Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de Silva, Minister and old student Vasudewa Nanayakkara, former Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara and the Richmond College Principal E.M.S. Ekanayaka, the staff and a large gathering participated in the events.
