Sri Lanka President opens new state-of-the-art fish market complex

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa Saturday (26) evening inaugurated the newly built state-of-the-art fish market complex in Peliyagoda, a suburb of capital Colombo.


The new Central Fish Market Complex is situated on a 3.17 hectare reclaimed marshy land along the main Katunayake airport expressway.


The complex was built at a cost of 1.7 billion rupees under the Colombo city restructuring programme to replace the age old St. John's fish market built in 1894 in Pettah, Colombo.
The Asian Development Bank has provided 675 million rupees and the government has provided the remainder.
The wholesale fish complex on ground floor will have 148 stalls. The top floors have been allocated for banks, post offices, police services, restaurant, and a quality control room. A 25-metric ton ice factory, three cold storages, and a water purifying plant also have been set up.
Ministers Basil Rajapaksa, Rajitha Senarathna, Mervyn Silva, Johnston Fernando, Sarath Gunaratne, Felix Perera, Deputy Minister Susantha Punchinilame, Governor of Western Province Alevi Moulana, Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and the Country Director, Asian Development Bank, Richard Volks also participated.
