Court hands out two-year prison term for former PSD Chief of Sri Lanka

A Sri Lankan court has today sentenced a former head of the Presidential Security Division (PSD) to two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for 10 years.

The Colombo High Court has sentenced retired Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Karunaratne ,former head of the PSD during the tenure of President Chandrika Kumaratunga, to two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for 10 for obstructing duties of a Police Officer in 2000.

Colombo High Court Judge Kumuduni Wickremesinghe has imposed a fine of Rs.25,000 and ordered SSP Karunaratne to pay Rs. 300,000 to the complainant police officer Hettiarachchi Samudrajeewa as well.

The case was filed against SSP Karunaratne for threatening SI Hettiarachchi Samudrajeewa while he was trying to carry out his duties to arrest some criminals on February 2, 2000.
