Assaulted MP asks all Sri Lankan legislators to unite to eliminate domestic violence

Sri Lanka's actress turned politician, parliamentarian Upeksha Swarnamalee also known as Pabha has called on all legislators to work to eliminate domestic violence.

Speaking during the debate on the extension of emergency regulations in parliament today, Swarnamalee has said that all 225 legislators needed to unite in the effort to eliminate domestic violence from the country.
Swarnamalee was recently in the center of much controversy after she was admitted to hospital last month with facial injuries sustained allegedly during a domestic dispute.

She was allegedly assaulted by her husband and had to receive treatment at the Sri Jayewardenepura hospital and a private hospital.

MP Swarnamalee, a popular teledrama actress, elected to the parliament from Gampaha district under the opposition United National Party ticket. She later expressed support to the government at the 18th amendment to the constitution and crossed over to the ruling party.
