95 hospitals closed in Sri Lanka while number of patients increased by 20%

Sri Lanka Health Ministry sources say that island wide 95 hospitals have been closed within the past five years.
The Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena says that this closure of hospitals has taken place whilst the number of patients has increased by 20% within these five years.


The Minister has directed the relevant officials to take necessary actions to reopen these hospitals.

It is identified that these hospitals have been closed as a result of lack of human and material resources. Most of these closed hospitals are in remote and rural areas.

The Minister has directed the Secretary of the Health Ministry to appoint new doctors, nurses and other staff to these hospitals and to provide necessary facilities.
