The United Nations confirmed Tuesday (01) that it received a letter addressed to the Secretary-General concerning the treatment of a Sri Lankan journalist.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Colombo has transmitted to New York the petition handed over to the UN office in Colombo by the wife of the missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, the assistant spokesperson to the Secretary-General said at the press briefing on Tuesday.
It was also channelled to colleagues in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Right and is now being reviewed, the spokesperson said.
Prageeth Eknaligoda, a columnist and cartoonist for the LankaeNews website, whose office was set on fire in the pre-dawn hours of Monday (31), disappeared over a year ago in January 2010.
His wife Sandhya Eknaligoda last week reportedly handed over a petition to the UN office in Colombo seeking the UN's help to find her husband.
