Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today visited the flood-stricken Anuradhapura district and promised speedy measures to bring the normalcy to the affected areas.
Participating in a discussion held at Central Bank auditorium with the government officials, President Rajapaksa urged all officials to commit themselves to provide maximum relief to the people affected by the deluge.
The President directed the relevant officials to take speedy measures to repair the flood-damaged roads, irrigations systems, and schools. He emphasized the need to carry out the repairs properly on the damaged infrastructure to withstand any natural disaster.
He pointed out the need to implement a solid programme to assist the farmers whose fields and crops were destroyed by the floods. President Rajapaksa instructed relevant officials to provide seeds free of charge and fertilizer at a concessionary rate to the farmers.
The President asked the officials to employ people whose livelihoods were lost due to the floods in the renovation work and development projects that have been implemented in the district.
While emphasizing that the development drive of the country will not be stopped in the face of various criticisms the President assured the government is committed to fulfill the responsibilities that should be carried out for the betterment of the people.
The President also visited the affected people in Rambewa and distributed dry rations.
Governor of the North central Province Karunaratne Divulgane, Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake, Minister S.M Chandrasena, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, President's Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath, Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and senior government officials were present.
