Over 1,500 prisoners to be pardoned in Sri Lanka but the fate of former Army Commander unknown

Sri Lanka government has decided to release 1,553 prisoners to mark the 63rd Independence Day that falls on tomorrow (04).

The Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera says that the persons who were jailed for minor offences and due to failure in paying fines will have the opportunity to get freedom.

However, persons sentenced under serious counts including murder, robbery and anti-government activity cannot enjoy this benefit, the Minister stated.

Rumors are spreading in the country that jailed former Army Commander and the Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka will also be released on Independence Day. However, no official confirmation has been made by any competent authority in this regard.

The analysts cited legal barriers in regard of pardoning the former military leader.
