A Sri Lankan government Minister today has requested the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake to postpone the local government election in the flood-affected districts.
Housing Construction and Engineering Services Minister Wimal Weerawansa in a letter to Elections Commissioner the today has said that it is not appropriate to conduct the local election on March 17 in flood-ravaged areas.
Sri Lanka's North, North Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces are hit by a second wave of floods affecting nearly a million people and causing wide spread damage to the infrastructure and farm lands.
The Election Department has scheduled the local government elections on March 17 to select 301 local government bodies.
