Sri Lanka President distributes relief items to flood victims

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning visited the flood-hit areas in the North Central Province to assess the conditions and the needs of the people affected by the floods and rains.

In Polonnaruwa district the President met with the flood victims temporarily sheltered in the Hingurakkoda Maha Vidyalaya and distributed dry rations.

Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Mahinda Amaraweera, Chandrasiri Sooriyarachchi, and Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunge accompanied the President.
However, bad weather prevailing in the area has forced the President Rajapaksa to cut short his visit other flood-hit areas in the Province and return to Colombo.
During the visit, President Rajapaksa met government officials and instructed them to take immediate measures to provide fast relief to the people.
He has issued instructions to renovate the tanks and bunds that were damaged due to the floods within a period of one month as soon as the weather condition improves.
