The Thai police have arrested 50 illegal Sri Lankan immigrants in Bangkok early Wednesday morning, Thai media reports said.
Suspected members of Sri Lanka's vanquished terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were believed to be among them, the police have said.
The police have rounded up the Sri Lankan immigrants living in rented rooms on the Soi Phermsin off Phahol Yothin Road in Bang Khen district.
The immigrants have been sent to the Immigration Bureau for further questioning, The Nation reported.
A Globe and Mail report in August said the Tamils arrive in Bangkok from Sri Lanka on two-week tourist visas and stay in rented apartments pretending to be tourists until a ship is ready to take them to Canada.
In October this year Thai immigration officials with the aid of the Crime Suppression Division of Thai police raided several apartments in Bangkok city and arrested 155 illegal Sri Lankan immigrants.
